Tea for Tiger
This pastel is part of a body of work illustrating different aspects of the beauty, the delicacy, the design of a Tea Ceremony. Although most of the other artworks in the series are of a water-based nature, “Tea for Tiger” needed a different technique to impact the underlying messages of fragility. For each strike of the soft pastel, another majestic creature, another environment, another glint of clear air or water disappears.
Starting at the bottom of the image one can find a Tiger Orchid that cradles the teacup for our tiger; it is placed among branches of the plant Bleeding Heart. On either side are sprays of Tiger Lily flowers, although the animal is large, it is careful not to damage any flowers in the resting area. The Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly is in charge of carrying and serving his majesty’s cup. All around the tiger one can see fantasy butterflies who serve him, two to carry and pour from the teapot, two that attend to the grooming of his whiskers. To further point out the late hour of protecting such a creature, as well as a beautiful ceremony- shafts of light dancing in from the left illuminate bamboo and grasses that serve as a background for his majesty.
Also in this series are paintings using the teacup as part of the design within interlocking circles of flowers, fruit, insects and lady’s folding fans.
